Tips for a Great Tennis Volley!

During a tennis lesson, its very important that the tennis coach covers the Volley. Mastering the volley is a really east way to win points quickly. The following tips will help:

  • Make sure your body weight is leaning forward, on the balls of your feet.

  • Your hands and racquet should be way out in front away from your body. There should be very little bend in the elbows, arms almost straight. This does 3 things: 1} It increases the likelihood that you will make contact out in front and 2) It protects you from a hard hit ball. By having your racquet out in front you can protect your face from getting hit with the ball. 3) It gives you better visibility. If you catch the ball a little bit behind you then you are only seeing it out of your peripheral vision which leads many times to the ball hitting off the frame instead of the strings.

  • Move towards the incoming ball vs retreating and moving backwards. This is something that i see quite frequently during tennis lessons, more frequently with women because more women are uncomfortable at the net than men in my experience. However, some men struggle with this as well.

  • Position your tennis racquet at approximately 45 degrees. It should NOT be vertical when you hit the ball. If its vertical, you increase the likelihood that the ball will wind up in the net

  • Keep a fairly firm wrist. The wrist should never break or flop.

  • The swing should be very short and compact and come from your shoulder. The shorter the swing, the greater chance for consistency and fewer mishits.

  • If you want to add some depth to your volley, simply open up the racquet head slightly. You do this by laying the wrist back and aiming your strings slightly upwards.

Here are two videos on the Forehand volley that I like. Notice how the arm moves from the shoulder as one unit. Also notice that the wrist does not break and contact is made out in front.
