How to Fix a Common Mistake on Your Forehand...

During tennis lessons, one of the most common technical errors people make on their forehand is that when they swing, their arms criss cross almost like they are giving themselves a hug. I usually make a joke and say they love themselves :-) The reason this is a problem is it causes the following issues..

  • It prevents the shoulders from fully rotating. This results in a significant loss in power.

  • It almost always causes the person to make contact late because the left arm actually prevents the player from extending out toward the ball.

  • Making contact late will cause unnecessary stress on the arm and could lead to elbow problems.

Fix: The easiest way to fix this problem is to simply have the student catch the racquet with their non-hitting hand on the high follow through. This clears the left shoulder out of the way and it also allows them to make contact further out in front. This will almost always lead to an immediate increase in power and accuracy. Catch that tennis Racquet!
